Sad State

Is news about entertainment? Some people seem to think so.

Read here, and read about that cruise ship that... well. Initially it was thought that it fended off the pirates. Then the tale changed, and the ship outran the pirates.
Now they're using description like "bullets and rocket propelled grenades filled the air."

Next they'll be saying that when the pirate attack started, the cruise ship began playing Eye of the Tiger and mild-mannered cruise-goers armed themselves with heavy weapons from the secret armory under the wet bar. Well, actually, lets analyze the sensationalism of this news. There were two speedboats which approached the cruise-ship. The ship was fired on with, what the passengers assumed were "machine guns." Generally, the image I get is assault rifles, so lets just imagine the generic AK-47. Also, there was a rocket propelled grenade launcher. Whether it actually hit its mark remains to be determined, as most RPG's do not behave well on rough seas, or when used from and to a moving target.

Like the old barbary states, pirates have made a comeback on the southern seas, and like the times of the barbary states, they thrive when their image is bolstered by dramatizations like this. I'll tone it to reality for ease of consumption. A cruiseliner was assaulted by two speedboats packed with hoodlums armed with firearms and an RPG. This isn't the Battle of Midway. Only one person was hurt. There were no fatalities. It's like what's happening over most of mid-Africa right now, only they took to the sea.

Could we do something about it? Sure. Are we going to do something about it? Well, it's been discussed, but talk is cheap.
